Whatever Tuesday: It’s a…! and a Blog Award

Harvey and Greg struggled to bring the pine tree inside that we had just cut down at Greg’s place in the mountains. He had a surplus of pines and needed to clear a few close to his cabin.

I busied myself getting the warm water in the tree stand, adding some green food coloring, a trick my mother taught me to keep the Christmas tree greener. I brought it out and while my husband and friend secured the tree I put on Christmas Carols.

Drinking Hot Toddy’s we strung lights, put up glass decorations and lastly tinsel. I love tinsel don’t you? Yes, I know it makes a mess but…it’s Christmas.

Jasper came around the bend licking his paws. His hackles went up; he glared at the tree and sprang toward it faster than any of us could catch that cat. Up to the top. I feared my glass ornaments would get broken.

A hiss, a howling meow and down came a squirrel and Jasper right after it, tinseled tail and all. Around and around they ran between the tables, chairs and tree. Harvey, Greg and I all gave chase. Finally, I threw a towel over the squirrel and we laughingly released it into our backyard.

Writer’s license: I wrote the story in a fictional setting, but I heard that this really happened to someone on the radio last night. There was no mention of tinsel, something I don’t allow in my house do to the mess.

Now onto my blogger award.

L’Aussie created this award: L’Aussie Fair Dinkum Award

Isn’t it awesome? A picture of oz. Yes, apparently so. She awarded it to all her fair dinkum blogging friends. I’ve been called a lot of things but never that. And it seems an honorable thing to be identified as. I got the award because she thought I was someone special. Super cool, anyway, I commented on her blog and that was one reason.

She gave it to a lot of folks. I’m not sure I can do that. For one thing, if I give it to everyone, we might run out of people who blog. I have chosen three fair dinkum bloggers.

1. Emma de Mattos at The Voices In My Head, because she is Dominic’s daughter and she and her dad came up with this really cool writing game that I will be sharing later this week. I mean, two writers, a dad and a daughter both blogging. How much more Fair Dinkum can you get? (I won’t give to Dominic, that way she can.)

2. Misha at My First Book who is a full time student, blogger and aspiring writer and even so tackled NaNo…that’s more than I would do. She lives in South Africa and actually follows me. So she’s definitely Fair Dinkum.

3. Jules at Trying To Get Over The Rainbow who writes the most fabulous blog post and can create a story out of almost anything. I bow to your great abilities. If she ain’t Fair Dinkum, then I don’t know who is.

INSTRUCTIONS

Recipients of this L'Aussie Fair Dinkum award are asked to:

• leave me a comment on this post, telling me what you think Fair Dinkum really means in 30 words or less - not just in the blogging world, but in your whole world view. Do you know some fair dinkum people? Tell us about them.

• tell me why you think I chose these particular images to represent Oz

THEN:

• post on your blog, linking back to me if you're pleased to receive my award

• pass the award onto the 'fair dinkum' bloggers in your life - as many/few as you like

OPTIONAL: Write a blog post on your thoughts about being fair dinkum but please link back to me so I can read it!

By the way, L'Aussie isn't saying what fair dinkum means until later this week. So I may be totally wrong. Whatever it turns out to be, I think it's worth a laugh.

Have a great day and be fair dinkum to all.

I just hopped over from l'Aussie's blog.

As I'm Fair Dunkum and true blue I won't spoilt the fun by saying what Dinkum actually means.

I just left l'Aussie and Wow! Regardless of the award your words brought a tear to my eye, thank you my friend. Now...

I cheated Aussie slang says it means, real and/or genuine. Cannot get any more real than me. What you read is what you get :)

Why the image...I can think of nothing more real Aussie than that image. At least from perspective

THANKS again Nancy!

tinsel is one of my favorites too. Must have it if you have a tree.

That was a lovely tree decorating story.

You are Fair Dinkum! I actually got to read the descript from L'Aussie in her comments, as a couple people had already guessed.

Have a great week NR.

Thank you Nancy for posting the Fair Dinkum Award. I'm amazed at our lack of PR seeing so many didn't actually know that being fair dinkum is the highest accolade an Aussie can give someone - means you are true blue through and through! Great that you passed it on!

N. R. Williams said...

Thank you Golden, I loved tinsel as a kid, but when I had to clean it up I changed my mind.

I'm glad you enjoyed my story Donna. I was going to add that I'd better check out those comments on L'Aussie's blog but surprise, she commented after you and told me.

A high accolade L'Aussie, true blue through and through. I am awed. Thank you so much.

Woah Thanks! I'm so honoured! This is so great! I'm honestly chuffed.
I would have to honestly say I have no clue what it means, but the internet informs me it means honest and fair! I'll be sure to pass the award on to the 'Fair Dinkum' people I know!

Thank you notes.

I didn't say I lived it Mary, LOL. But my parents used to drink Hot Toddy's while they watched us string tinsel.

You're welcome Emma. Actually, L'Aussie stopped by and told us what it means in the comments above.
Thank you all for dropping by.
