Sunday Bible Study:

The Gospel According to John
John 1:2
He was in the beginning with God.

Footnote: 2.2
In the beginning, that is, from eternity past, the Word was with God. Contrary to what is supposed by some, it is not that Christ was not with God and was Not God from eternity past, and that at a certain time Christ became God and was with God. Christ’s deity is eternal and absolute. From eternity past to eternity future, He is with God and He is God. This is why this Gospel, unlike Matthew (ch. 1) and Luke (ch. 3), has no genealogy of Christ (Heb. 7:3).

John 1:3
All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him not one thing came into being which has come into being.

No specific footnote for verse 3.

Of the four Gospels I'm pretty sure I've read John the most (or the beginning anyway). I really love the way it starts...

"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." <--- that's my fav part :-)

This is the heart of the mystery of the incarnation. The pre-incarnate Christ was with the Father before creation - before the big bang, if you like. We cannot grasp in our limited human minds what sort of form he took, but it was not the Man that we have pictured for us in centuries of Christian art. The Father, the Logos and the Spirit outside of time, within the eternal now, where we choose either to dwell with him even as we are bound to the created universe, or to dwell apart from him. It is our free will choice, and it is a choice we make every day.

John is one of my favorite books. :) Thanks for the reflection.

Thanks again, Dom, for sharing this additional tidbit. Yes, we do choose to live Christ daily.

You're welcome Elizabeth.

Beautiful verse. I adore this kind of study. And Dominic's explanation is so true - our human minds really can't grasp the full picture. It's beyond us, but it's there.
