**
Tad prowled the ambulance double checking the supplies. The 2011 Zombie Crawl in downtown Denver appeared innocent enough. So far, someone stubbed their toe.

Brad stuck his head out the window. "A woman is unconscious."

Tad jumped into the passenger seat and the ambulance crept along to avoid hitting any of the walking dead. The costumes were fun and several were over the top like the guy dressed up as the devil. They spotted the woman. Her friend was crouched beside her, cell phone in hand, gore and blood smeared on a crumpled shirt.

Tad jumped out of the vehicle and approached. "What happened?"

"Someone shoved her into the lamp pole."

Tad bent and took her pulse. Her all white makeup made it difficult to access her. Her mouth hung open with a nasty black glob that appeared to be decay. She moaned and opened sea-green eyes. No makeup there. Tad felt his heart flip once. He ignored it.

"How are you feeling?" he asked.

She tried to sit and lost her balance.

"Easy, you've got a goose egg on your forehead that looks real enough." He probed it.

"Ouch."

"What is you name?" Tad began the usual questions.

"Veronica," she said.

"Where are you?"

"Denver."

"What year is it?"

"2011. You go'in to ask something interesting?"

"Sorry, I need to make sure you're okay. Come on." He helped her up and guided her to the ambulance. "I think an ice pack on the injury is wise." Tad grabbed a bag and began to squish it until it was icy cold. Then he put it on Veronica's injury.

"Ouch," she said and put her hand over his.

This time Tad couldn't ignore the sparks that filtered under his skin and made his entire right side flaming hot. Veronica's sea green eyes engaged his own brown ones.

"You’re an ambulance guy?"

"Paramedic," he said.

"Right, never thought you'd like a mess like me did ya?"

"You're not a mess. You’re a zombie."

"Right…and you're handsome. Any plans for the near future."

"I'd like to have you for dinner in the usual sense of the term."

"Dinner it is. I better clean up first thought."

Tad kissed her, sweet and hungry he wanted more. Veronica giggled when he pulled back.

"I gored you," she said.

Tad used a towel from the ambulance to wipe black makeup from his face. "Anytime, sweet heart."

I was inspired by the 2011 Zombie Crawl in downtown Denver that is held every year as a food drive to benefit local charities. I hope  you liked the story and will take a peek at the crawl.

Nancy, hi! This is delicious. We just had our Zombie Crawl in Brisbane where we broke the Guinness Book of Records for the highest number of zombies, ha ha ha. It was surreal bumping into them in the street.

Loved how you inserted romance into this piece. How cool! How tingly!

A great Haunting piece.

Hi,

Hee hee, I wondered how many visits to RFWers before Zombies would surface!

This was great Nancy. Surreal surroundings and real-time Paramedics getting on with it, until Tad's encounter with Veronica. Nicely written and the lit touch-paper between them just enough to bring forth flames of desire. ;)

Hi Francine
With so much inspiration from zombies I just had to add them in. Glad you enjoyed my story.

Hello.

Dear Nancy,
Thank you for your kind words about my post.
I've never heard of the Zombie crawl before and agree with Andy's comment.
What fun! Very clever of you to take a real event and insert a romance. I agree with Donna Hole about how well you used all the Zombie-terms. Love the tight-rope walk between make-believe and reality, the flirt being thankfully real!
Beautiful text.

I guess we'll be in touch in December again. I don't think my time will allow me to participate in NaNoWriMo, as much as I would love to do it. I have an essay to write that I have put off long enough.
Best wishes & hugs,
Anna

I like that you injected some real life into a theme that's usually based on fantasy. This is a nice read and flows well. I like the easy chemistry between the characters. Well done.
