Facebook Copyright Notice and Update

Greetings all.
No I haven't dropped off the face of the planet. My daughter is learning the GIMP program so she can create book covers. I haven't been able to do much except help her.

So folks, Facebook can now copy your information, your pictures, your stories. They are a public entity. And no, there isn't an alien occupying them, at least not to my knowledge. Did I lose you? Entity = Alien in several movies. LOL

So here is what  you need to post on your Facebook page to stop them from copying what you are posting and working on. Copy and paste on your wall.

"In response to the new Facebook guidelines I hereby declare that my copyright is attached to all of my personal details, illustrations, comics, paintings, professional photos and videos, etc. (as a result of the Berner Convention). For commercial use of the above my written consent is needed at all times! (Anyone reading this can copy this text and paste it on their Facebook Wall. This will place them under protection of copyright laws. By the present communiqué, I notify Facebook that it is strictly forbidden to disclose, copy, distribute, disseminate, or take any other action against me on the basis of this profile and/or its contents. The aforementioned prohibited actions also apply to employees, students, agents and/or any staff under Facebook's direction or control. The content of this profile is private and confidential information. The violation of my privacy is punished by law (UCC 1 1-308-308 1-103 and the Rome Statute). Facebook is now an open capital entity. All members are recommended to publish a notice like this, or if you prefer, you may copy and paste this version. If you do not publish a statement at least once, you will be tacitly allowing the use of elements such as your photos as well as the information contained in your profile status updates..."
I copied this from my friend, Vicki Rubin. Wonderful lady and excellent cozy mystery writer.
Come by on Monday for the continuing series on short stories and flash fiction.

Snopes.com also says Facebook's claiming to own your copyrights is a hoax.

It's a hoax,Nancy. While I have your attention, I'm way behind wrapping up the Ripple's Effect blog book tour. Can you PLEASE inbox me your mailing address so they can send you a copy of the book? Pleaaaaaaaaaaaaase. Thanks. :)

Though I've heard about the copyright message and it's debunking by Snopes, I'm under no illusions that Facebook is as altruistic as it claims to be. I'm slowly getting myself off there (because heaven forbid that I should just deactivate my profile. What would my 'friends' think of me then?) ... I'm a little cynical when it comes to Facebook :)

That's why I'm glad I'm not on Facebook.

I've been very careful what photos I post on Facebook.

Thanks everyone.
Hoax or not, it doesn't hurt to post copyright information. A notice is important on your blog as well.

I'll email you Dani.

Hi Nancy .. it's interesting to know what's going on .. I don't really do FB - but will next year - so I'll watch what I do even more carefully.

Good luck to your daughter - she sounds one useful lady! Image retouching and editing is always useful ..

Cheers Hilary
