Insecure Writers Support Group, Holidays

Hi everyone, welcome to the December 2012 Insecure Writer's Support Group post, brain child of Alex J. Cavanaugh.. I thought I would post on the Holidays. It seems appropriate, don't you think?

Every year at this time numerous people go completely bananas. Usually these same people lead fairly normal lives, but with the frenzy that is modern Holidays, they turn into crazed individuals trying to do, spend, have, celebrate, too much. Are you one of them?

On the flip side you have those who become anti social and allow the 'spirit of the Holidays' to run them into a deep depression. Usually attributed to the fact that they can't financially do, spend, have, celebrate, too much. Are you one of them?

More importantly, is your character(s) one of these types and why?

Often our characters enhance one or more of our own emotions. Their joy or their hardship spills over them flooding everyone around them with the same emotion. They ooze tension, despair, excitement, or happiness.

As for me, I have a triple wammie. My birthday is the 18th and my husband is the 27th. This year we are broke and have been for about four years now. So I am buying gifts for the grandchildren and nothing for myself, my husband or my own children. Even so, you can still make something memorable out of the season. We went on a pine cone hunt and I bought Elmer's glue and glitter at the Dollar Tree, for $1.00 each. My grandchildren are having a lot of fun making their own ornaments and I look like grandma glitter. LOL

Recipe: Put glue all over the pine cone. Open the glitter and sprinkle. Attach a string. And there you have it, a glittered pine cone.

Happy Holidays everyone.
Nancy

Hi Nancy. I'm sure your grandkids are having heaps of fun and knowing they have such a loving grandmother is more important than having expensive gifts - yours is the most precious gift. Still, money helps, and i wish you a PROSPEROUS New Year. But do enjoy the Holiday Spirit.

Hi Nancy - good one write about - except you sound not insecure and are just grateful for creative thinking .. the pine cone sprinkles sound fun. I remember making paper chains - first doing the flour and water glue, then cutting strips of paper and then the chains .. flour everywhere!!

Love these memories .. you'll be making the most of everything I can see that .. cheers Hilary

Saying hello from IWSG...Are you referring to the day after Thanksgiving when people go crazy at all the sales? I try to avoid that when I can. Your glitter pine cone sounds so easy to make. Thanks for the tip!

My fondest memories of holidays as a kid as doing fun things with my family - like crafts or hikes and even just talking by the fireplace.

I do like the idea of thinking about how your characters would be at the holidays though.

Hi Denise
Me too and also for you.

Hi Hilary
There's tons of insecurity in my life, I've learned to ignore it if possible.

Hi Cynthia
It is fun.

Thank you all for stopping by.

Making their own ornaments is a wonderful idea! My hubby and I don't spend money on gifts either, but we always celebrate with a special dinner and cake or cookies. "Gifts" can be food that warms the heart, too. :-)

Great idea! Your grandkids will remember making glittery pinecones for the rest of their lives. It's those types of gifts that count. (Visiting from the IWSG.)

Nancy, can you believe it December and yes all the craziness that goes along with it. I'm still trying to catch up after November's NANO push. I feel as though I've neglected my friends horribly. I just deleted my FB account, linkedin account and Stage 32 account. It's a crazy world out there!

I think your idea with the pine cones is lovely. I know it's a memory your grandchildren will always have. The real gift!

I understand your financial predicament, completely, I do hope things turn around for all of us in 2013.

Now it's on to all the posted tributes to Alex...
