Depression

Hi all...no this is not a down post. I am curious about depression. When I get sick I get a double dose of it. I can't see the light through the open window, so to speak. Usually, I come around as my health improves even when my life isn't perfect. Hay, whose life is? So, does anyone else have this problem? How do you lift yourself up? Medication, either prescription or herbal can only do half the job and I'm not convinced therapist do more than collect money to nod their heads. So let me know in the comments. I am limited in my exercise until I can take a deep breath.

Hi Nancy. I have had issues with depression on and off for most of my life but I think a lot of it has been situational rather than chemical, if that makes sense. Therapy never really worked for me. Like you said, the therapists just nod their heads and don't really give any helpful advice, in my opinion. Medication was always was more than I needed and I hated the side effects - like being drowsy all the time. I found that watching/reading funny movies or books helps a lot. Exercise really helps but it doesn't have to be strenuous for you. Maybe just taking a walk outside in the sunshine if the climate you're in permits it at this time of year. I've found a good dose of sunshine can really do the trick. I hope you find something that helps.

Great advice Jenn. I think I'm coming around, everyday seems a little brighter. The problem with walking is I run out of breath even just going to the bathroom and that is followed by 5 minutes of non-stop coughing. Really aggravating. I'll check into some comedies, good idea.

I fall into the depression from time to time too. Not clinical depression, but still the blues.

I'm like Jenn, if I exercise, I feel better. And if I try to eat better, it helps a lot (especially if I have a little chocolate at the end of the day. It always lifts my spirits).
But if you are fighting sickness. Just getting enough rest is good and reminding yourself that this will go away.

Whoa, this was way too long of a comment. *blush* Good luck. I hope you feel better soon Nancy.

Exercise would be my answer as well. Even just walking would help, Nancy.

Hi Nancy,
Any depression I have suffered has been situational. In the past I would cope by keeping a journal. It also helped me to find distractions (commiserating with friends, a light book, a funny movie). I hope you find something that works great for you.
BTW...thanks for visiting my blog. I would love to try out a manuscript exchange, if you're willing. My email is hatfield98us(at) yahoo(dot)com

A shower, a nap, a walk, a good book, and making a meal to share-- my favorite remedies for depression. Good luck, Nancy!

I agree Alex.

Consider it done Susan.

Hi Karen, all those suggestions are great.

Thank you all for dropping by, I appreciate each of you.

I'm on medication, but you're right--the medication only takes care of the chemical imbalance. That's only the beginning of coping with it! I was lucky to have a wonderful therapist. She told me three things that have seen me through the worst times:
1) Remember that it will pass
2) Do something for somebody else. Make a special dish or send a card or drop by a web site and leave a supportive comment.
3) Always be on the lookout for the tiny things that delight you. The color of the wall right where the light meets the shadow. The smell of clothes fresh from the dryer. Hot buttered toast.

And always, always remember that you are loved.

Hugs,
MA

Hi Nancy, My cure for depression is laughter and a good dose of George Clooney. I need plenty of that during the dark Norwegian winters. Gave you a shout out today on my blog, maybe that will cheer you up a bit.

Thanks Marian, I like the hot buttered toast.

Oh, I missed it but will stop by today.

Hi Nancy,
It's been a long time since I stopped by. Sorry to hear you're feeling down. I understand. There are just some days that seem darker than others and being sick can certainly make it worse.

The best thing I can recommend is lots of hot tea, a warm blanket and Netflix :D Find something funny or cheerful to watch. That usually helps me remember that sooner or later, I'll feel better and be back in the game.

Feel better soon!
Jen
